March for Life, Love, Hope and Christ
Jan 22, 2018
This past Friday, once again hundreds of thousands of people of all ages, faiths, and ethnicities converged on Washington DC sharing in common the most important and most beautiful message that could ever come from the human heart and be spoken upon human lips: Respect Life...Cherish Life…Treasure Life…Love Life.
More than a biological designation, our lives and all life have their meaning, value and purpose in connection with Jesus Christ who says: I am the way, the truth and THE LIFE. As we hear from the beginning of the Gospel of John which is read Christmas Day, that day when God is at last made visible to the world as a baby:
In the beginning* was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.a
2He was in the beginning with God.
3* All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.b
What came to be 4through him was LIFE
and this life was the light of the human race…
To those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God…who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God
14And the Word became flesh*
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.
In the USA alone, there is still up to 4,000 young lives extinguished each day. Imagine the Two Towers death toll occurring each day since the 1973 ruling legalizing abortion. We have since made an idol out of “choice”. Yes, God is pro-choice but He gave us Free Will and the example of His Incarnate Son to make the right choice, the Christ Choice. In responding to Israel’s “choice” to slaughter their own children to the idol Moloch, He laments: “Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols…they desecrated the land with bloodshed…they defiled themselves by their actions…so the Lord grew angry with his people…He handed them over to the nations and their adversaries ruled them…brought low by their own guilt.”
The statistics are staggering and this does not even factor in the numerous abortions caused each year by women who are consistently using oral contraceptives. These pills serve as an abortifacent, which means that a woman can have at least one or more abortions each year due to its chemical nature. When you break down the word “contraception” it means “against life”. Besides, we usually take pills to prevent diseases and stop pain.
Our society has developed a very dangerous contraceptive mentality, which implies that pregnancy is an illness or pain that must be contained or terminated. During the experimental phases of these oral contraceptives, there were two pills introduced, one for men and one for women. When one man in the control group suffered a shrinking of his testicles, the experiment was immediately scrapped. For the women, three died and they merely adjusted the dosage.
Blessed Pope Paul VI (who is currently being investigated for Sainthood) envisioned the destructive nature of contraception and related his prophetic and Holy Spirit inspired thoughts and concerns in the must read Papal document Humanae Vitae. Among his many concerns, he saw that contraception would lead men to objectify and use women and insure than many partners would be made available to them without any fears of negative consequences.
With adultery, divorce, promiscuity and pornography rampant, we can no longer doubt this Pontiff’s tremendous foresight nor the ridiculous charge that the Church denigrates women. The Church continues to be a stalwart defender of the dignity and beauty of women as this document so powerfully demonstrates.
The Pro-Life attitude is also about respecting the gift of one’s sexuality and the appreciation that it finds its greatest and most sacred fulfillment within the context of marriage. Compare a married woman who has just received news of her pregnancy with a single teenager of about 15 who has received similar news. Why is one crying with joy and the other in fear? We instinctively understand that there is a proper place for sex, just like fire in a fireplace is good but in my dining room is lethal, sex has its right use. If we truly believe that we as members of Christ’s Church are His Body, then the individual choices we make are decisions that affect this very same body, though with eternal consequences. Given the sacred nature of this Body, would Christ’s Bride ever choose abortion or contraception?
Thankfully, the Church has many resources in place to perpetuate life that we can all participate in. Offering up decades of the Rosary each day for a greater awareness of life’s sanctity. Awareness of Crisis Pregnancy Centers like Good Counsel/Malta House or Project Rachel. Prayerful and silent protests outside of Abortion clinics especially with an icon of our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Unborn. Calling up the Family Life/Respect Life Office for the Diocese of Bridgeport. And especially for you young people who are the bullhorns and strength behind this whole movement…practice chastity and understand yourselves and your gift of sexuality as treasures to be cherished for marriage.
That we are alive and have people in our lives who we love and love us…how truly blessed are we. May that same blessing and those same opportunities to know love and create cherished memories be afforded to all people.
