Guardian Angel Feast Day
Oct 2, 2018
I cannot imagine anything that brings us more peace and contentment, especially a child, when having the awareness and confidence of being well taken care of, protected and provided for. We know the world can be a dangerous place, but for a child who is brought up in a loving and doting environment by way of his/her parents, grandparents, godparents, siblings and extended family, the world seems so safe as to be a Heaven here on earth.
God in His great Providence is constantly providing us with care…with protection…with a great defense against the harms that life and more so the devil and the fallen angels can inflict upon us. Therefore in His continuous and countless expressions of love for us, He assigns to us from the moment of our conception our own Guardian Angel. In today’s first reading from Exodus we hear:
Thus says the LORD: "See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.
“My authority resides in him.” That authority is the power of God…but a similar power that comes from us is meant to reside in our Guardian Angels as well. Like God, they will respect our Free Will. They will not force their love and protection upon us. The more we acknowledge them, are aware of their presence beside us we give them greater strength and power to protect and defend us. But the primary way we do this is though prayer…specifically the Guardian Angel Prayer. Unfortunately this prayer is typically associated with children in the sense that when we grow up we no longer need to believe in them like one might no longer believe in the Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny.
But if there is anyone who needs greater protection in life, especially the more aware we are of how dangerous this world is, it is Adults. And when those adults are parents, grandparents and godparents, they need to pray that prayer multiple times a day…granting these Guardians of goodness and defenders against evil greater power to protect them so that they can provide greater protection, love and care to their children who they are the primary human guardians of. As the saying goes, it takes a Village to raise and support a child, in this case, that Village happens to be Heaven.
Let us once again commit the Guardian Angel prayer to heart and memory, and often through-out the day lay down that perimeter of protection for ourselves, those we love and wherever our feet happen to fall by praying that prayer:
"Angel of God My guardian dear To Whom His love Commits me here Ever this day Be at my side To light and guard To rule and guide. Amen"
