In the USA alone, conservative estimates suggest there is still up to 2,000 young lives extinguished each day since the 1973 ruling legalizing abortion. Yes, God is pro-choice but He gave us Free Will and the example of His Incarnate Son to make the RIGHT choice…who says I am the way, the truth and the LIFE. God is Life, which is why HE CHOOSES us to live.
In responding to Israel’s “choice” to “sacrifice” their own children to the idol Moloch, He laments: “Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols…they desecrated the land with bloodshed…they defiled themselves by their actions…so the Lord grew angry with his people…He handed them over to the nations and their adversaries ruled them.”
This does not even factor in the numerous abortions caused each year by women who are consistently using oral contraceptives. These pills have an abortifacent nature, which means that a woman can have at least one or more abortions each year due to its chemical nature. When you break down the word “contraception” it means “against life”. Besides, we usually take pills to prevent diseases and stop pain. Our society has developed a very dangerous contraceptive mentality, which implies that pregnancy is an illness or pain that must be contained or terminated.
Pope Paul VI envisioned the destructive nature of contraception and related his inspired thoughts and concerns in the must read Papal document Humanae Vitae whose 50 year anniversary is acknowledged this month.
The Pro-Life attitude is also about respecting the gift of one’s sexuality and the appreciation that it finds its greatest and most sacred fulfillment within the context of marriage. Compare a married woman who has just received news of her pregnancy with a single teenager of about 15 who has received similar news. Why is one crying with joy and the other in fear? We instinctively understand that there is a proper place for sex, just like fire in a fireplace is good but in my dining room is lethal, sex has its right use.
If we truly believe that we as members of Christ’s Church are His Body, then the individual choices we make are decisions that affect this very same body, though with eternal consequences. Given the sacred nature of this Body, would Christ’s Bride ever choose abortion or contraception? Imagine if there were no baptism, or that the Sacramental life of the Church was extinguished because of certain methods and barriers in place that would prevent the conception and/or blossoming of spiritual life?
50 years ago Pope Paul VI made four rather general "prophecies" in Humanae Vitae about what would happen if the Church's teaching on contraception were ignored; this is what is meant by a contraceptive mentality and/or culture:
Infidelity and moral decline
The Pope first noted that the widespread use of contraception would "lead to marital infidelity and the general lowering of morality." The staggering increase in the number of divorces, abortion, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, and venereal diseases should convince any skeptic that sexual morality is not the strong suit of our age.
Contraception has made sexual activity a much more popular option that it was when the fear of pregnancy deterred a great number of young men and women from engaging in premarital sexual intercourse.
Lost Respect for Women
Paul VI also argued that "the man" will lose respect for "the woman" and "no longer (care) for her physical and psychological equilibrium" and will come to "the point of considering her as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment and no longer as his respected and beloved companion." Treating their bodies as mechanical instruments to be manipulated for their own purposes, they risk treating each other as objects of pleasure. The multi-billion dollar Pornography epidemic is the terrible case in point.
Abuse of Power
Paul VI also observed that the widespread acceptance of contraception would place a "dangerous weapon... in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral realities." The history of the family-planning programs in the Third World is a sobering testimony to this reality. In Third World countries many people undergo sterilization unaware of what they are doing. The forced abortion program in China shows the stark extreme toward which governments will take population programs. Moreover, few people are willing to recognize the growing evidence that many parts of the world face not overpopulation, but underpopulation. It will take years to reverse the "anti-child" mentality now entrenched in many societies.
Pope Paul's final warning was that contraception would lead man to think that he had unlimited dominion over his own body. Sterilization is now the most widely used form of contraception in the U.S.; individuals are so convinced of their rights to control their own bodies that they do not hesitate to alter even their own physical make-up.
The desire for unlimited dominion over one's own body extends beyond contraception. The production of "test-tube babies", in-vitro fertilization whose very nature is to destroy many embryos in the hope of salvaging a few is another indication of the refusal to accept the body's limitations, not to mention euthanasia. We seek to adjust the body to our desires and timetables, rather than adjusting ourselves to its needs.
There is simply not enough room to thoroughly cover this topic, so please refer to the document itself and prayerfully read it. The good news of methods like Natural Family Planning is that it invites intimate conversations each month regarding one’s marriage and family in addition to creating a deeper more impassioned devotion of spouses for each other based on mutual self-sacrifice and self-discipline whose spirit powerfully infiltrates in a most positive way all aspects of one’s life.
