Nearly 90% of people who have pre-diabetes don't know it and aren't aware of the risks to their health such as type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. The good news is that pre-diabetes often can be reversed through moderate weight loss, diet changes, and increased physical activity. There are certain factors that put some people at a higher risk such as:

  • Being over weight or obese
  • Not being physically active
  • Having a parent or sibling who has type 2 diabetes
  • Being over the age of 45
  • If you are a woman, having a history of gestational diabetes
  • Being a man

Any one of these risk factors increases the chance that you could have pre-diabetes and should be discussed with your doctor who will order a simple blood test.

A few tips to help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes include:

  • Manage your weight
  • Get active
  • Eat healthier
  • Quit smoking

Talk to your doctor about further testing and necessary life style changes.
